Where are the fires and how big are they?

Mark Woods at the RDOS put me onto an amazing tool for Google Earth.  It uses near real-time satellite sensing from the US government to show where current wildfires are.

To use it you need (updated for Summer 2017):

When you get to the FIRMS page, scroll down to "KML" and select the following for download

Here is a close-up of the Testalinden/Testalinda fire in Oliver as of the morning of 21 August, 2015. Click for a larger image

Note: For evacuation and other information go to the RDOS website and look for the link to EOC ("Emergency Operations Center").  It will contain the most up-to-date information from the RDOS.  For example, it currently has an interactive map of the Oliver evacuation zones.

You can also to get the most recent updates.

You may have noticed the large fires to the south in the first map. From https://www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2015/aug/21/okanogan-complex-fires-e...

Keith MacIntyre of Big Bear Software in Penticton has hacked up his own interactive map of BC fires.  This is how "open data" is supposed to work.

Or this map.
